External Professional Experiences

Ever since my admission into The Hoeft Technology & Management program, I knew fairly early on that Boeing was the company that I wanted to pursue out of each of the program’s generous corporate sponsors. As the world’s largest aerospace company and 2nd largest defense contractor, Boeing has an extreme breadth of opportunity for individuals of all backgrounds. It is divided into three main segments: Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Boeing Defense Systems, and Boeing Global Services. Its international presence combined with its technological expertise clearly stuck out to me and I felt that the company would be a natural extension of the T&M program into the workforce. Having been my first corporate experience, I was able to take on the company and each learning opportunity that presented itself with an open mind, despite having to do it all in a virtual environment.

Two truths and a lie: (1) bp stands for British Petroleum, (2) bp is just an oil and gas company, and (3) working remotely is never a good experience.

Actually, these are all false. Surprising, right? After interning with bp this summer in their Innovation & Engineering department, I would say “surprising” is the most fitting word to describe the whole experience which is why I thought I’d start off this way.

When it comes to working at a company like Synchrony, there is truly no way to capture the value of the experience you can gain. Within my first summer internship, I learned how to work in a team that I would have otherwise known nothing about. Throughout this internship, my co intern and I were able to create an effective solution that can be implemented for years after our internships ended. During the first couple weeks, my assignment leader provided all the necessary readings and explanations I needed while I started learning about the team I was in and the goals for the summer. As summer progressed, I felt entirely immersed in the virtual work culture and sat in on meetings with executives within the company, where I was even given a platform to voice my opinion.

This past summer I had the opportunity to work for Caterpillar as a Parallel Co-op engineer in May 2021. Although I have spent only 3 months at the company, I have learned so much about manufacturing, desktop application development, and Caterpillar’s unique culture.

An internship experience at Caterpillar gives you the opportunity to work and learn from industry professionals who have years of experience. All types of backgrounds have a home in this innovation-driven environment. From technical disciplines such as mechanical engineering, computer engineering, and data scientist to business disciplines, there is a job to be done. In order to support opportunities for such a variety of backgrounds, Caterpillar offers a myriad of work opportunities such as Data Analytics Intern, Engineering Co-Op, and other internships.

Getting an internship my freshman year wasn’t exactly on my radar. I always thought internships were for upperclassmen and I’d have no shot in obtaining an internship after only studying computer science for one year. After talking to other students in my major, I realized I was completely wrong. A lot of them had gotten internships for the upcoming summer at well-known companies through Research Park. I had never heard of Research Park prior to this, but a quick Google search led me to find their job board. I applied to all the companies that said they hire freshmen and waited to hear back. I received an email to interview with John Deere not too soon after, and the rest was history.

When we each got the email of our internship assignments this summer, we were all excited for different reasons. Abbie was excited to be working in Columbus with the nutrition division, where she had requested to be placed. Claire was excited to intern with friends from previous summer internships in St. Paul in the electrophysiology division. Stephanie was excited to spend her first summer away from home and work with the diabetes care division in one of her favorite cities to visit, San Francisco. When we each received the email that contained the words “100% remote”, we were disappointed of course, yet thankful we would still have an internship and trusting that Abbott University Relations (UR) would do their best for all the interns.
